  • What is the carbon footprint of EKO silicone oil?

Compared to regular silicone oil that uses a tremendous amount of energy to manufacture from quartz (silicon dioxide), EKO silicone oil is manufactured using a proprietary recycling process that requires much less energy. Numerically speaking, each kilogram of regular silicone oil has a carbon footprint of approximately 7.12 kg. Based on internal studies, EKO silicone oil is more than 75% lower!

  • What is EKO silicone oil made from?

Our silicone oil is made 100% from recycling pre-consumer silicone rubber scrap. These are scrap materials collected from manufacturers of silicone rubber products such as pacifiers, cell phone cases, automotive parts, tubings and much more.

  • How does EKO silicone oil help reduce landfill?

As the only silicone recycling facility in North America, we're also the only collectors of silicone rubber scrap on the continent. Prior to the establishment of our recycling facility in 2018, silicone rubber scrap would have been landfilled or incinerated. Currently, we divert more than 500 metric tons of silicone rubber scrap from entering landfills on a monthly basis.

  • How do you make silicone oil from recycling?

We use a chemical recycling process whereby silicone rubber is broken down chemically into short siloxane chains, the building blocks of silicone. After various refinement and purification processes, these chains are combined or put back together to produce silicone oil. If you're interested in learning more, take a virtual tour of our silicone recycling facility.

  • Does EKO products contain PFAS / PFOA / PTFE?

EKO silicone products do not contain any "forever chemicals" such as PFAS, PFOA or PTFE.

  • Is silicone oil biodegradable?

Although silicone oil in itself is not biodegradable, recent studies have shown that silicone oil degrades naturally in soil and water into basic building blocks called monomers within days to weeks. These monomers are then capable of being further broken down by microbes and light into CO2 and silicate (quartz). Therefore, while silicone oil is not biodegradable, it becomes biodegradable after just a short period of time.

Quality

  • Is EKO silicone oil lower quality since it's recycled?

Absolutely not! The beauty of our recycling process is that it does not degrade the silicone. During the recycling process, silicone rubber is broken down into shorter chemical chains that are then rebuilt into silicone oil. What you get is high-quality, pure silicone oil that is clear, colorless and odorless.

  • Are there any differences between regular vs EKO's eco-friendly silicone oil?

As both are composed of pure silicone, their chemical structure and specifications are identical.

  • Is "silicone lubricant" different from silicone oil?

For the most part, silicone lubricants you find in the market today is composed of a small amount of silicone oil dissolved into a solvent, commonly petroleum distillates or alcohol. The silicone oil is used as the "active ingredient" that lubricates. Generally, there's less than 10%, some have less than 5% silicone oil but this varies depending on the formulations.

With EKO silicone oil, you get 100% silicone so while it doesn't spread as nicely as silicone lubricants, it's equally as effective and you can use much, much less.

  • What surfaces and materials can I use silicone oil on?

Silicone oil is non-toxic and non-reactive making it compatible and ideal to use on plastic, metal, wood, rubber, vinyl and leather.

For wood surfaces, silicone oil will darken the surface, but will improve dimensional stability in varying temperatures and help protect it from moisture. Before using on wood, make sure to test a small patch first.

  • How much silicone oil should I use and how long will it last?

For most lubricating applications, just 1-2 drops will give long-lasting results for many months. However, to maintain smooth operations, we still recommend re-applying every 3-6 months. Depending on the application and conditions, you may need to re-apply more frequently.

For other applications, apply as necessary or contact us for more instructions.

  • What is the shelf life of EKO silicone products?

EKO silicone products have a shelf life of 5 years when stored in a cool, dry conditions.
